Looking towards the future

A message from Voluntary Action's Chief Executive.

During the months I have been in post, I have been very concerned to hear about a number of voluntary and community organisations facing closure due to a lack of funding. If your organisation is in this position, please contact me for a discussion (see contact details below). This would also help me because I am having a series of meetings with the statutory agencies and I need to know more about the ability of voluntary and community organisations in Stoke to deliver services to disadvantaged individuals and groups.

I have already had a number of meetings with senior individuals in health, education and regeneration and I am pleased to report to you that they believe strongly in the ability of the voluntary and community sector to do fantastic work. They understand that you can engage with individuals who cannot be reached by the “mainstream services”. I firmly believe that as the statutory services are increasingly refocused on “hard to reach” groups, then they will work with you and either fund you or signpost you to funding.

This won’t happen overnight, but the will is there and on 28th June the statutory organisations, including the Council, the PCTs and others, will sign the COMPACT which sets out a framework for co-operative working between the statutory sector and voluntary and community organisations. This is an important milestone in developing goodwill and constructive joint working between everybody in the interests of service users.

Meanwhile, don’t forget European funding. I have had a meeting with Liz Minshall who works for West Midland European Network (WMEN). Her role is to help voluntary and community organisations in Staffordshire and Stoke to access European funding and she would like to hear from any of you who would like to explore this option. Liz can be contacted through the WMEN website: www.wmeuronet.co.uk. European funding can be daunting, but Liz can help you with the “fear factor”. It might be right for you especially if you have a strong volunteer base (providing “match” funding) or are helping people into work or learning.

For those of you seeking funding, you can register for our regular funding updates by contacting Claire Nail at VAST on cnail@vast.org.uk. These can be either emailed or posted out to you in the months when ‘Action’ is not produced.
